Mark Hopkins Sets World Record
Boxhill flier Mark Hopkins, a research and development engineer from Morden in Surrey has set a new British & World endurance record for radio controlled electric helicopters. The previous British record of 13 minutes and 38 seconds (set by Richard Fry in July 2000) was an early casualty on a day which put British modellers at the top of electric model flight endurance. During the flight, a small gathering of fellow modellers and friends held their breath as the seconds ticked away. The tension increased as the model appeared to lose power at about the fifty minute point, however Mark reassured them telling them that this was a normal characteristic of the battery he was using. Finally, after an incredible flight of 1 hour 10 minutes and 50 seconds, he landed safely beating the previous record by just under four minutes. What made his time even more incredible was the fact that Mark used a standard off-the-shelf model sold by his local hobby shop. The current world record of 1 hour and 6 minutes and 56 seconds was set by Jacques Boyer from France using a specially made high-tech twin rotor helicopter. "I'm over the moon" said a smiling Mark afterwards "I can't believe that I've finally done it!". Mark, who designs batteries and chargers for the film and broadcast industry, made a special re-chargeable battery for his helicopter that he claims has the highest power to weight ratio of its kind. Mark (43) is married to Wendy and has two children Samantha (3) and Hannah (2).
